This set was selected as the winning design of a LEGO Technic "You Design It - We Make It!" competition, which ran in 2012. The aim of the competition was to develop an alternative model based around the chassis of the 9398 4 x 4 Crawler. The set was limited to 20,000 copies. The inside of the box contains printed signitures of the LEGO Technic design team. Each copy of the set contains an exclusively printed license plate with a number from 1 to 20,000 (e.g. EK 01234).
