Will LEGO Release A Star Wars Lightsaber Collection?

23rd October 2022

LEGO's Star Wars Helmet Collection has proven a hit with fans since it debuted in 2020. However, the number of iconic headgear that is yet to be boxed up in a LEGO set is fast running out, and next year could see the last sets in this range (if we haven't had them already).

In recent years, LEGO has shifted towards recreating artefacts from popular franchises. For example, the Marvel theme has had sets such as Thor's Hammer (76209), the Infinity Gauntlet (76191), and the Nano Gauntlet (76223), while Harry Potter has given us the huge Hogwarts Icons - Collectors' Edition (76391).

As yet, Star Wars' step in this direction has been small, with the obvious examples being the two lightsaber GWPs. These are the most famous objects from the galaxy far, far away and it begs the question whether LEGO would expand their offering here to make a whole subtheme of them.

There are plenty of distinct lightsaber hilts out there to choose from. Darth Maul's dual hander, Count Dooku's angled handle, and Darth Vader's classic hilt all spring to mind. While all are different in their design, their colours and size are mostly very similar. Just look at the Yoda's Lightsaber and Luke's Lightsaber sets. This is likely to put off casual Star Wars fans, but for the more devoted enthusiast, this won't matter a jot.

However, you could also make this observation about the numerous LEGO Star Wars spaceships with their overwhelming greyness.

Ultimately, LEGO's success depends on appealing to the masses, so I suspect they would have to introduce more variety to such a collection, by perhaps showing some of the lightsaber's blades. If LEGO did that, we think a "Lightsaber Collection" could be a real possibility. However if they don't, LEGO will want to fill the gap of conveniently sized display sets for the adult collector some other way. Perhaps their move towards medium-sized diorama builds has been done so with this in mind.
