Is the LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley™ (75978) a Good Investment Set?

LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley™ set

Just behind Hogwarts Castle, the second edition of Diagon Alley is the second biggest Harry Potter set LEGO has made. With a scheduled retirement date of December 2024 there's plenty of time to purchase this set either for building or investment. In this article we'll do some analysis to answer the question "Is this a good investment set?".

The set

LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley™ set

As the name suggests, Diagon Alley is based on the shopping street where Hogwarts students go to stock up on supplies before the school year starts. The set is packed full of colour and small details from many of the films, meaning the end result really captures the magic and charm of the place.

The build is made up of 6 shops (Ollivanders™ Wand Shop, Scribbulus™ Writing Implements, Quality Quidditch™ Supplies, Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor, Flourish & Blotts™ bookseller, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes™ and the Daily Prophet™ entrance) which are put together in 4 sections to make a model over 1 metre in length!

The modular capabilities are a big plus for this set because it means you can have any combination you want and they also fit together with the other modular buildings LEGO has produced. This means the set appeals to a wide range of LEGO fans, not just those into Harry Potter.

Undoubtedly Diagon Alley is one of the best LEGO Harry Potter sets and the designers did a fantastic job at creating a versatile product that can either serve as a play set or a display model.

Price wise it currently retails for £389.99 / $449.99 / 449.99€ with a decent price per piece of 7.0p / 8.1c / 8.1c.

The Minifigures

LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley™ set

Included in the Diagon Alley set are 17 minifigures and all of them are exclusive to this set with the exception of Hagrid and Darco Malfoy.

They are a great selection of figures including the core characters such as Harry, Ron and Hermione but also some lesser known ones such as Florean Fortescue and Garrick Ollivander. Minifigures often dictate the value of a set so it's promising that there are so many.

Gilderoy Lockhart is currently the most valuable so if you can't fork out for the whole set it might be worth just being him separately.

Outlook

Diagon Alley is a great model, with excellent minifigures that should appeal to a wide array of LEGO fans so the outlook for this set after retirement looks very promising.

There is also a strong rumour going around that LEGO will bring out a Gringotts set this year which may boost the appeal of Diagon Alley as the two are closely linked.

However it should be noted that the Harry Potter theme as a whole hasn't performed very well in the past. After sets have retired you will often struggle to sell them for anything much higher than their RRP. For this reason it's hard to recommend any Harry Potter sets to any LEGO investors but if you are going to add some to your collection then Diagon Alley is probably one of the best ones to go for.

TLDR

Investment opportunity: Good / Fair
