Is the LEGO Stranger Things a Good Investment Set?

LEGO Stranger Things The Upside Down

The LEGO Stranger Things set called "The Upside Down" has been on sale since June 2019 and may retire this year. Currently it's the first and only Stranger Things themed set LEGO has made (excluding the Barb Comic Con exclusive), and we're continuing with our theme of asking, is this a good investment set?

The set costs £179.99 and has 2287 pieces making the price per piece 7.9p which isn't great and worse when you consider a lot of these are smaller pieces. If you compare this to the Assembly Square which has the same price but includes 4002 pieces (4.5ppp) you can see why the price has been questioned. However it is a very cleverly designed and memorable set, I wouldn't reccommend buying it at full price but instead wait for a 20 - 30% discount.

Being the only set in the theme could be good for it's future value once it retires, it's hard to say. On the one hand being the only set could make it more elusive but on the other hand themes with multiple sets appeal more to collectors.

However this could all change with the announcement of Stranger Things 2. I'm not sure how the licencing agreement LEGO has with Stranger Things works, but in theory it would probably be easy to extend this and produce more sets. This could also mean that The Upside Down gets extended for a couple more years which would hurt it's investment potential. The longer it's on sale the more opportunities there are to purchase it and the more common it becomes.

Personally I'm expecting the price to be around £200.00 1 year after retirement.
