Today LEGO officially revealed the first Art set of 2023, which will hit shelves on January, 1. Hokusai - The Great Wave is based on The Great wave of Kanagawa by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. The artwork was created using a woodblock print that shows a large wave about to crash over three boats of fishermen, with the iconic Mount Fuji in the background. It's one of the best-known pieces of Asian art and is recognised around the world.

The set has a very high piece count, with 1,810 parts making up the build. There is extensive use of 1x1 round tiles for the background and angled plates for the foreground. These are layered on top of one another to add a 3D element to the wave.

LEGO have also added a wider frame than previous Art sets to give it a more realistic look that closely resembles actual artwork you might have on your wall.

The set will retail for $99.99 / €99.99 / £89.99.

While this set might seem like good news for lovers of Japanese art, there was a much more impressive 3D model of the Great Wave submitted on LEGO Ideas that made it to 10,000 supporters and is currently under review. This official reveal obviously signals the end of the road for that particular project.
