This polybag was a promotional set commemorating the 30th anniversary of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. In the UK, this polybag was given away free with a minimum purchase of £30 in Smyths toy stores. In the US, it was given away free at various promotional events, such as Star Wars Day at LEGOLAND California and to builders of a large LEGO mural at the Star Wars Celebration V event. In Canada, it was given away free at the 2010 Toy Fair, in Sweden, it was given away free with purchases of 8097 Slave I, and in Australia it was given away free with purchases of selected Star War sets at Toyworld. It is estimated that 10,000 copies of this polybag were distributed worldwide.
